What is the Filipino Women's Association UK?

The Filipino Women's Association UK is a non-political, non-sectarian and non-governmental organisation based in the United Kingdom.

Who are its members?

Our members are Filipino and non-Filipino women from a variety of backgrounds who reside either permanently or temporarily in the UK, and who share an interest in the Philippines and the welfare of Filipino women and children.

What do its members have in common?

We believe that we have something to contribute to the development of the Filipino community in the UK and to the welfare of women and children in the Philippines, and we are willing to share some of our time, talents or resources towards our goals.

How is the FWA (UK) managed?

An Executive Committee (Ex Com) comprising members who are elected at the Annual General Meeting, sets the policies and procedures, establishes and oversees the work. Standing and ad-hoc committees deal with various activities and manage the projects of the association.

What are the goals of the FWA (UK)?

Our goals are:

  • to project a balanced view of the Filipino women and emphasise our importance and contribution to our society.
  • to provide opportunities for Filipino women and children from disadvantaged groups to have a better future.
  • to develop our own potential to become better members of both the Filipino and the wider communities where we belong.
  • to be able to integrate more effectively within the British society as equal and respected members of the UK community.

What do members do to achieve these goals?

  • We participate in women's projects, attend meetings, seminars and respond to local government consultation documents/ meetings on women's issues in the UK.
  • We offer scholarships to children with disabilities and those from poor families all over the Philippines.
  • We support charities that care for abandoned babies and abused women in the Philippines.
  • We publish a regular free newsletter to which members can contribute to develop their creative and writing skills.
  • We provide seminars and talks on arts, culture and topical issues of interest to women and hold informal gatherings for members to share ideas and skills.
  • We link up with other international women's groups and participate in local community events.
  • We organise various fund-raising events to support our projects.

Who can be a member?

Women of Filipino descent, aged 18 years and over, residing in the UK, of good moral standing in the Filipino community, who share the objectives of the FWA (UK), and are willing to contribute towards attaining these objectives may apply for full membership.

Membership is open to non-Filipino women who are either related to Filipino nationals or who have a keen interest in the Philippines. Such members shall be at least 18 years of age at the time of application for membership.
