The creation of a tapestry depicting scenes from Philippine history was a centennial project of the Philippine National Council of Representatives (PNCR) for UK & Ireland. Each member region sewed their panel to the other panels – forming Centennial Tapestry – a fitting symbol of unity for the 70,000 Filipino Community in the UK and Ireland.
The Tapestry
Roland Manipol, who was a leading Filipino artist in the UK, designed the Centennial Tapestry. FWA–UK’s panel of Gabriela Silang was the final piece that was sewn – during the Philippine National Day Dinner Dance! This would complete the Centennial Tapestry. Gabriela Silang was the first Filipino woman to lead an army against the Spanish oppressors.
Purpose
The target was to raise the initial £10,000 needed to open a drop in Advice Centre which will be operated in conjunction with the Commission for Filipino Migrant Workers.
