FWA-UK Celebrates Heritage, Empowers Dreams at 36th Philippine National Day Gala

A Night of Unity and Celebration

On 15th June 2024, the Filipino Women’s Association UK (FWA-UK) hosted its 36th Philippine National Day Fundraising Gala at the luxurious Palace Suite of the Royal Garden Hotel in Kensington. The event commemorated the 126th year of Philippine Independence and brought together members of the Filipino community, friends, and supporters for an evening dedicated to celebrating heritage while raising funds to provide scholarships for disadvantaged children in the Philippines.

The FWA-UK was honored by the presence of distinguished guests from the Philippine Embassy, including His Excellency Ambassador Teodoro L. Locsin, Jr., Madam Maria Lourdes Locsin, Deputy Head of Mission and Consul General Rhenita B. Rodriguez, and Ms. Maricar Romanillos, Secretary to the Ambassador. Their attendance underscored the strong bonds and shared values between the FWA-UK and the Philippine Embassy.

An Evening of Prayer, Music, and Speeches

The gala commenced with an opening prayer led by FWA-UK Founding Chairman and current advisor, Dr. Remy Reyes, setting a tone of gratitude and reflection. Filipina West End singer and actress, Gia Macuja Atchison, then serenaded guests during dinner, adding a touch of glamour and elegance to the evening.

FWA-UK Chairman, Velly Cattermole, addressed the audience with a powerful reminder of the organisation’s commitment to education, stating,

“For 36 years, we have witnessed first-hand the transformative power of education. Through your generous donations, we have empowered countless young minds, opened doors of opportunity, and changed the trajectory of lives.”

His Excellency Ambassador Teodoro L. Locsin, Jr., followed with a welcome address that celebrated the achievements of Filipino women across various sectors, emphasising their invaluable contributions to society. His witty observation that

“The ones who decide our future as men, are our mothers and our wives. What can you do? I’m certainly not gonna fight that,”

drew laughter and applause, resonating with the shared experience of many in attendance. In a display of warmth and approachability, the Ambassador also took the time to visit each table, greeting guests and posing for photos.
