Celebrating 37 Years of Community: FWA-UK Founding Day & Salo-Salo 2025

On Saturday, 5th April 2025, the Filipino Women’s Association UK (FWA-UK) proudly gathered members, families, and friends for a joyful afternoon at St Helen’s Church, North Kensington, to celebrate its Founding Day and Salo-Salo Celebrations.

Now in its 37th year, the FWA-UK continues to stand as a pillar of empowerment, community, and cultural pride. What began in 1988 as an association focused on promoting a positive image of Filipino women and strengthening ties between the UK and the Philippines, has grown into a thriving charity dedicated to providing educational support for disadvantaged children in the Philippines and assisting the senior community here in the UK.

The event was opened by our host, FWA-UK Secretary Ira Lehmann, who warmly welcomed everyone and set the tone for the day. A heartfelt prayer, led by our founding member Nenita Garrad, reminded us of our shared purpose and the enduring values that continue to guide the association.

Our Chairman, Ms. Velly Cattermole, shared inspiring opening remarks, highlighting the achievements of the FWA-UK and the unwavering spirit of bayanihan that keeps the community connected, wherever we may be in the world.

We were honoured to have esteemed guests from the Philippine Embassy joining our celebration, including:

  • His Excellency Ambassador Teodoro Locsin Jr.
  • Madame Louie Locsin
  • Consul General Rhenita Rodriguez
  • Ms. Grace Bañez from the Cultural Office

Their presence was a testament to the strong bond between the Filipino community in the UK and our homeland.

The afternoon unfolded with delightful moments — from sharing masarap na Filipino food at our communal merienda, to the buzz of friendly competition with community games. The highlight of the day was undoubtedly our Salo-Salo Bingo, which brought out lots of energy and excitement as guests mingled, filled their cards, and won fantastic prizes!

Guests also enjoyed exploring our fantastic community stalls, showcasing Filipino entrepreneurship:

  • Merienda Ldn – Shirley Soriano
  • Skin Care Essentials – Michael Monsalud
  • Thermomix – Leilanie Marie Indopia
  • Kangen Water – Carolyn Dagupen
  • JT Accessories – Jeannette Thomson

As the celebrations drew to a close, there was a palpable sense of pride and unity in the air. Through our shared stories, laughter, and connection, we were once again reminded that FWA-UK is not just an association — it is family.

Mabuhay ang FWA-UK! Mabuhay ang Filipino community sa UK!
