Empowering Women: Recap of FWA-UK’s International Women’s Day Event

On 27th March 2024, the Filipino Women’s Association UK (FWA-UK) hosted an inspiring event in celebration of International Women’s Day, titled “Exploring Gender & Philippine Labour Migration.” Held at the prestigious SOAS University of London – SOAS Khalili Theatre, the event brought together a diverse audience to delve into the complexities of gender equality and the experiences of Filipino women in the labour migration sector.

Engaging Discussions
The evening commenced at 18:00 GMT with engaging discussions led by thought leaders, activists, and experts in the field. Dr Sharmila Parmanand, Assistant Professor from the Department of Gender Studies at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), kicked off the event by exploring the nuanced relationship between gender and Philippine labour migration. Dr Joyce Jiang, Associate Professor in Human Resource Management at the University of York, followed with insights into the challenges and opportunities faced by Filipino women in the workforce.

Promoting Equity in Nursing
One of the highlights of the event was a compelling presentation by Louie Horne, BEM, RN, Senior Global Health Fellow at NHS England. Louie delved into the critical role of Filipino nurses in promoting equity within the healthcare sector, shedding light on their invaluable contributions and the need for greater recognition and support.

Chairman Velly Cattermole concluded the event with heartfelt closing remarks, encouraging all attendees to build a future together where every woman’s journey is marked by opportunity, every migrant worker’s labour is honoured and respected, and every individual is free to pursue their dreams without fear or discrimination.
